The Acer Aspire 5 in particular has been one of our favorite cheap laptops for years now thanks to its solid hardware performance, nice keyboard and touchpad, and impressive 1080p display for a computer in this price bracket. It’s well-built, too, and offers very good battery life. The Aspire 5’s battery lasted from nine to 13 hours during our web browsing and video streaming tests, which beat out similar laptops.

Any workhorse laptop is all about hardware, and with a cheap PC like this, you don’t want to cut too many corners just to save a buck. The Aspire 5 has it where it counts with an AMD Ryzen 5 5500U processor and 8GB of RAM, which are perfect for general work tasks and everyday use. One nice bonus is that you get a 512GB SSD as well, which is about twice as much storage as you’ll typically find on a budget laptop. Everyone knows Lenovo for the suit-and-tie ThinkPad laptops, but fewer people are aware that this name also graces many of the best gaming laptops to hit the market in recent years — and that includes some killer Black Friday gaming laptop deals like the Lenovo Legion 5. Gaming machines aren’t cheap, but for less than a grand, it doesn’t get much better than this Legion 5, which pairs an Intel Core i5 processor with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti with 6GB of VRAM.

That’s a fantastic CPU/GPU combo for any sub-$1,000 laptop and is more than suitable for running the latest games at good settings (and we reckon that’ll be the case for a few years at least, so this laptop should last you awhile).
