Affordable excellence makes the TCL 6-series the TV to buy in 2018

If you’ve been following our CES 2018 coverage of TVs, then you’ve seen some pretty outlandish, aspirational stuff. Samsung’s 146-in MicroLED “The Wall,” LG’s 65-inch 4K roll-up OLED, and Sony’s 10,000-nit 85-inch 8K LED prototype powered by the company’s X1 Ultimate processor are all grabbing headlines across the ‘net. But what about a TV you might actually buy in 2018? That’s where the TCL 6-Series 4K HDR LED TV comes in.

TCL surprised us in 2017 with its P-series TV, a 55-inch 4K HDR LED with Dolby Vision and the Roku TV operating system built in for just $650. With a 72-zone full array local dimming backlight (FALD) system and expanded color gamut, the P-series performed as well as top-tier TVs from the likes of LG, Samsung, and Sony, but with a much lower price tag.

The new TCL 6-Series builds on TCL’s success, adding more zones to its backlight system and expanding the series to offer a 65-inch model, which has even more backlight zones. With these upgrades and some tweaks to picture processing, the new 6-Series is poised to be one of the best TVs to buy in 2018, and likely the most affordable excellence available on the market.

As is generally the case with CES, manufacturers don’t give exact availability dates and don’t discuss pricing, but if history is any indicator, TCL will let us know when the new 6-Series will be in stores and online for purchase, and just how affordable it will be.

TCL -- one of the biggest players in the smart TV space -- today unveiled full details for the newest versions of its venerable Roku TVs. Updated are the 5-Series and 6-Series sets, and the scheme remains the same. The 5-Series looks to remain pretty damn good and super-affordable. The 6-Series will be smarter on the inside, more attractive on the outside, and a little more taxing on the wallet.

With those preliminaries out of the way, let's just get to it.

This stunning, folding 4K TV now costs 50% less, but you still can’t afford it

MicroLED technology promises to one day give us absolutely huge TV screens at accessible prices. But that day is not today. Instead, it is being used to create some of the most dazzling -- and exorbitantly expensive -- TVs on the planet, like the stunning, folding 4K M1 TV from Austrian brand, C Seed, which will set you back $400,000. But we've got great news for those who simply refuse to spend more than $200,000 on a folding TV: C Seed has just announced the folding 4K N1 TV, which you can add to your home (or superyacht) for the miserly sum of just $190,000.

But just to keep your expectations in check, $190,000 is the starting price for the N1. For that amount, you're looking at the smallest screen size of just 103-inches. It's available in two larger sizes too (137- and 165-inches), but as they say, if you have to ask how much those sizes cost ...

TCL’s giant 98-inch 4K TV hits CES — and stores — for under $8,000

How much should you expect to pay for a staggeringly huge 98-inch TV? If you're Samsung, the answer is $15,000 for its 98-inch QN90A Neo QLED 4K. If you're Sony, the answer is $20,000 -- but hey, you're actually getting two more diagonal inches because that's how big its Bravia XR X92 is. On the other hand, if you're TCL, the answer is "under $8,000" for its 98-inch XL Series 98R754, a massive 4K QLED Google TV that you can pre-order on Amazon today, for $7,732.

The 98R754 joins TCL's existing XL Collection, a set of TVs that are all 80 inches or larger in size, including the company's flagship 85-inch 8K QLED X925pro (X9), which uses TCL's latest generation mini-LED backlight system, called OD Zero. Originally, TCL said that the X9 would be available for $10,000 before the end of 2021. But that clearly didn't happen, and no new timeframe has been announced.
