Amazon To Set PS3 Slim Limit
Amazon is so concerned about the anticipated demand and limited supply of the forthcoming PS3 Slim, which is due to arrive next month, that’s it limiting purchases to one per household.
The company has said:
“In an effort to provide as many customers as possible with the opportunity to purchase PlayStation 3 120 GB, we are limiting the total number of PlayStation 3 120 GB units that can be purchased. As a result, each household may only purchase one PlayStation 3 120 GB unit.”
It Keeps Going, And Going: Sony Drops PlayStation 2 to $99
Sony’s venerable PlayStation 2 has been on the market even longer than Windows XP: Sony first introduced the console in late 2000 (in North America) and (despite some revisions that have slimmed down its case and lowered component costs) has remained largely unchanged in that time. And the PlayStation 2 business has been very good to Sony: the company has managed to sell over 50 million units in North America. Now Sony is looking to sell even more, announcing that it is dropping the base retail price for the PlayStation 2 from $129 to $99, putting it under that oh-so-important $100 price point.
Holy Realistic Smoke! Nvidia Brings PhysX Engine to PlayStation 3
PlayStation 3 gamers will soon be able to slosh around in realistic water, crumble rocky terrain with explosives and cut through cloth like it’s… well, cloth. On Wednesday, Nvidia announced that its PhysX engine, which enables more life-like interaction with 3D game environments, would be coming to Sony’s PlayStation 3.
Specifically, the companies have signed a “middleware license agreement” that opens up Nvidia’s PhysX toolbox to game developers working on the PlayStation 3. All licensed Sony developers will now have free access to the PhysX software development kit (SDK) through Sony.
Heavy Gaming Might Lead to Skin Sores
The British Journal of Dermatology has described a condition dubbed PlayStation palmar hidradenitis, wherein a 12-year-old Swiss girl developed painful sores and lumps on her hands. Doctors concluded the cause was heavy PlayStation gaming, combined with a skin disorder called idiopathic eccrine hidradenitis that can cause red, sore lumps on the hands and feet.
Sony’s PlayStation 2 Hits 50 MIllion Mark
Most of the buzz in the video game industry these days centers around the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, and the seemingly unstoppable sales juggernaut of the Nintendo Wii, but amid all that hype and hooplah, it may be important to note that Sony’s best-selling console system isn’t the PlayStation 3: it’s the PlayStation 2. Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that it has recently sold its 50 millionth PlayStation 2 system in North America.
PlayStation Home To Launch by End of Year
Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed to gaming site Joystiq that it plans to keep its promise to launch an open beta of its PlayStation Home virtual world for PlayStation 3 owners by the end of the year…but has declined to provide any other details of the launch.
Sony Ships New PS3, PSP Firmware
Sony Computer Entertainment has shipped firmware version 2.5 for its PlayStation 3 console and firmware version 5.0 for its PlayStation Portable (PSP), adding new capabilities to each device. The PS3 firmware update adds support for Sony’s official Bluetooth headset and Flash 9 video support, while the PSP firmware update adds the PlayStation Store, enabling users to download games whenever they’re at a Wi-Fi hotspot.
"These firmware updates keep both PS3 and PSP in lockstep with consumer expectations for gaming and entertainment, particularly the ability to download PSP games on-the-go, which is a functionality we know consumers can’t wait to get their hands on," said Sony’s senior VOP of marketing and PlayStation Network Peter Dille, in a statement.
Sony Announces 80 GB PS3 for Japan
Japan is the home turf for Sony’s PlayStation gaming line, so the company has a tendency to introduce new models and hardware in the Japanese market before migrating them overseas to North America and Europe.
But this time, the situation is a little reversed: Sony has announced it will begin offering a new PlayStation 3 model in Japan at the end of October. The unit will feature a 80 GB hard disk drive…and a ¥39,980 price tag. That puts the new unit at the same price as the currently 40 GB PlayStation 3.
Sony Launches Life with PlayStation
Sony has formally launched its Life with PlayStation service for the PlayStation 3, enabling PS3 owners to set up a news, lifestyle, and information channel right on their PS3 consoles. Initially, Life with PlayStation will feature a Live Channel with a world map interface, where users can access information based on place and time. Initial content includes news headlines from Google News, live camera images of almost 60 cities around the world, weather information from the Weather Channel, and cloud imagery provided by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center.
