What You Need

  • A compatible Google Pixel phone

This feature is somewhat exclusive at the moment, as it's only available on the Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 9 series smartphones. Don't have a Pixel photo? Samsung could be bringing a similiar tool to some of its next devices. Whether recording a special event or capturing a moment outdoors, this feature helps ensure your audio remains clear and engaging. Here’s how to use it.

What is Audio Magic Eraser?

Google’s Audio Magic Eraser is integrated directly into the Google Photos app for easy access. This feature intelligently analyzes videos to identify various sound elements, such as speech, music, and background noise. Users can selectively reduce or eliminate distracting sounds — like wind or background chatter — while enhancing desired sounds, such as voices. This effectively cleans up the audio, making videos sound clearer and more focused. Audio Magic Eraser offers a convenient way to improve audio quality without the need for external software or expertise, saving users time and effort.

Which phones have Audio Magic Eraser?

Audio Magic Eraser is still fairly exclusive, having released for the Pixel 8, but not having spread further than other Pixel phones. As we've mentioned, it may be on the way to Samsung's phones, starting with the Galaxy S25. But for now, here are the only phones that support this feature:

  • Google Pixel 8
  • Google Pixel 8 Pro
  • Google Pixel 8a
  • Google Pixel 9
  • Google Pixel 9 Pro
  • Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold

Using Audio Magic Eraser

Here are the steps you need to take to use Audio Magic Eraser.

Step 2: From there, choose the Edit button at the bottom of the screen.

Step 5: From here, you can adjust the audio by using the Auto or Manual option.

By choosing the Auto button, you let Google's AI automatically reduce background noise. For Manual control, you can choose the Music or Noise button and make changes gradual changes to your liking. As changes are made, you can hear the differences by choosing the Play button that sits on top of the video.

An important point to consider

Audio Magic Eraser’s effectiveness depends on the original video’s quality and the types of sounds present. It works best when clear distinctions are made between the sounds you want to keep and those you wish to remove.

It's a good idea to experiment with different settings and preview your changes before saving, as the adjustments can sometimes be subtle.

Audio Magic Eraser is a relatively new feature, and Google may continue to improve its accuracy and capabilities over time.

Android 16 adds a new way to use the Google Pixel 9’s fingerprint sensor
Pixel 9 Pro in Rose Quartz.

Biometric security — the ability to unlock your phone with your fingerprint or face — is an amazing feature, but you often have to turn on the phone's screen before you can use it. That's because many fingerprint sensors are optical and need light in order to work. Fortunately, Android 16 will make it so that you can open your Pixel 9 without turning your phone screen on at all (while also avoiding the groan that comes from searing your eyes.)

The feature was noted in the Android 16 Developer Preview 2, or DP2, by 9to5Google. The findings imply that this only applies to the Google Pixel 9 series because while it does appear in the Settings search on the Pixel 8 Pro, there's no option to enable it. This is likely due to the Pixel 9's ultrasonic fingerprint scanner; the improved hardware doesn't require light to use it.

Google Pixel Watch 2 -- $200 $250 20% off

We were impressed in our Google Pixel Watch 2 review. We called it a “huge upgrade, offering better performance, battery, and more.” It offers “slick, fast performance” along with “comprehensive fitness tracking.” That’s thanks to Fitbit’s most accurate heart rate tracking, its body-response feature, and even skin temperature changes, as well as the now typical fitness tracking tools and the ECG app. It offers 24 hours of battery life from one charge, while its gorgeous design is more watch-like so it looks good on your wrist. It also has Google AI built-in and it has safety features like fall detection, an emergency SOS tool, and Safety Check where your watch shares your location with close contacts in the event of any issues.

Google may change a small, but crucial chip with the Pixel 10
Google Pixel 9 Pro XL in Hazel.

The Google Pixel 10 series may break from the Pixel 9 series and use a different, but crucial new component compared to the previous models. The next Google Pixel phones will use a MediaTek modem rather than the Samsung Exynos modem, according to an anonymous source speaking to Android Authority.

MediaTek makes various 5G capable modems suited for use in smartphones and other mobile devices, along with modems suitable for home networking. During Mobile World Congress in early 2024, it announced the T300 5G platform, which brings 5G to “power-constrained” devices like wearables, proving it's expertise in the area. For the Pixel 10, Google has apparently selected an as-yet unreleased MediaTek platform called the T900, which will use an also unreleased modem with the name M85.
