Detailed by a Tennessee publication called Knox News, a 40-year-old man named Lowell Turpin suspected his live-in girlfriend, 38-year-old Crystal Gray, of cheating on him or possibly planning to have an affair with another man. As Gray was preparing to talk a walk down to a local convenience store on July 22, 2012, Turpin watched as she checked her Facebook page on her laptop before leaving. Upon seeing a man’s picture on her Facebook page that he didn’t recognize, he demanded to know who the man was and what her relationship was with the mystery fellow. Gray pointed out that was a picture of presidential candidate Mitt Romney and Turpin responded by ripping the laptop out of her hands before smashing it against the wall.
According to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department incident report, Turpin was also angry that she was “attempting to communicate with friends through her Facebook account.” Following the destruction of the laptop which injured Gray’s hand, Turpin punched Gray on the right side of her face.
Gray fled the residence with family members and called the local police. When the police arrived at the scene, the officer noted that she had several small puncture wounds along the interior of her mouth which matched up with her version of the incident. Gray refused medial treatment, but the responding officer did take several digital photographs of the injuries as evidence of the assault.
When police officers visited Turpin’s residence, he denied hitting Gray in the face as well as claiming injuries of his own. After listening to several versions of the story from Turpin, officers took him into custody on a domestic assault charge and he’s currently sitting in jail in lieu of a $1,000 bond. It’s also highly likely that he’s finally familiar with the Republican candidate for the President of the United States.
