According to industry researcher Strategy Analytics, Samsung is close to passing Motorola to grab the No. 2 spot in global mobile phone sales.

Over 157 million handsets were shipped worldwide in Q2 2004, and “with strong sales in all major regions, global handset (sales) grew at a 38-percent annual rate in the second quarter,” Strategy Analytics said in a statement. The research group also boosted its annual worldwide forecast for 2004 to a record 670 million phone unit shipments from the 586 million it had forecast earlier this year. While four of the top six vendors grew in excess of 50-percent year-over-year, the company’s numbers shows Samsung closing in on Motorola’s position at second place.
