Motorola’s Defy+ gets even tougher with the help of JCB

Motorola Defy Plus JCBIs your job or lifestyle so fraught with danger that you need your phone to cope with almost any situation? Are your weekends filled with the kind of activities that even Bear Grylls would suck air through his teeth at before moving on to something more sensible? If so, then the stock Motorola Defy+ may not be tough enough to keep up.

But not to worry, as construction machinery manufacturer JCB has stepped in to add their own tweaks to the Defy+, creating a phone that while really quite ugly, promises not to start sniveling at the first drop of rain or hard landing.

What makes the JCB limited edition unique is a protective sleeve that wraps around it, specifically designed to absorb heavier impacts than the standard phone. It also offers lay-on-the-table protection thanks to a prominent lip. Add this to the Defy+’s water-resistant, dust-proof and scratch-resistant abilities, and you’ve got a one tough little phone.

JCB has also added their own application, which contains tools perfectly suited to those who wear sturdy boots and hard hats on a regular basis. You get a spirit level, a flashlight app, a decibel monitor and a theodolite for measuring angles.  Inside the JCB-branded packaging is a car charger and an extra-long curly charger cable.

On the technical side the battery has been uprated to 1700mAh, but otherwise, the Motorola Defy+ is the same as the regular model with a 3.7-inch touchscreen covered in Gorilla Glass, a 1Ghz processor, a 5 megapixel camera and Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Finally, and one of the best features of the JCB Defy+, is an extended 24-month warranty, which goes some way to showing Motorola and JCB believe in the phone’s capabilities.

Currently available through select online retailers, the Motorola Defy+ JCB Edition costs £260 SIM-free, or about $400.
