Mobile phone giants Nokia and Vodafone are pushing to create a universal Java standard to create a more consistent platform for developers of different handsets.
“The initiative has received support from competitors, including Orange, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, Sun Microsystems and T-Mobile International.
Vodafone and Nokia said others would become members of the expert group for the specifications being created for the open unified mobile Java architecture.
The plans have the backing of the J2ME Executive Committee and are based on two Java specification requests, one for lower-end devices (based on CLDC specifications) and another for higher-end phones and smart phones used by professionals (with CDC platform specifications). “
