6 New York subway stations to receive free Wi-Fi this summer

6 new york subway stations to receive free wi fi this summer mta

Underground signals for phone and Internet connections are still a rarity in New York City’s subway system, but as of today, Boingo and Google Offers have partnered up to provide free Wi-Fi in six stations across the city. In addition to the selected stations, 200 other hotspots in Manhattan will be outfitted with complimentary Boingo services so New Yorkers, native and visitors, can have access to the Web any time of day.

Dubbed the “Summer of Free Wi-Fi NYC,” the Boingo program is sponsored by Google Offers — which makes perfect sense if you’re also looking for local deals wherever you are in the city. The subway stations that will enjoy free Wi-Fi include lines across 14th street stations, from west to east, as well as select 23rd street stations. These six stations are:

  • A, C, E station at Eighth Avenue and West 14th Street
  • L station at Eighth Avenue and West 14th Street
  • C, E station at Eighth Avenue and West 23rd Street
  • 1, 2, 3 station at Seventh Avenue and West 14th Street
  • F, M station at Sixth Avenue and West 14th Street
  • L station at Sixth Avenue and West 14th Street

If some of these locations sound similar to you, it’s likely because New York City already offers phone and Internet signals at these stations as of last fall, but those services are solely available for AT&T and T-Mobile customers. With the Boingo and Google Offers partnership, anyone with smartphones or tablets regardless of their provider can connect to the free Wi-Fi while waiting for their next train.

“Google Offers and Boingo want to help New Yorkers get to the fun part faster, whether that is an amazing deal on dinner and a movie, or a quality Wi-Fi connection to their email or the latest viral video,” says Dawn Callahan, vice president of consumer marketing for Boingo Wireless. “Free Wi-Fi sponsored by Google Offers makes it easy for everyone to get their Internet on this summer via Boingo’s network across Manhattan.”

Wi-Fi connection underground for most New Yorkers can also mean one great benefit: The ability to message someone they are meeting if they are delayed by trains or will be early. Hey, with public transit, you never know.

“We’re glad our riders will be able to access free Wi-Fi this summer in six subway stations to stay connected while they’re underground,” said Jerome Page, the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA)’s director of strategic initiatives says. “Reliable Wi-Fi is an important benefit for straphangers in New York City subway stations.”

Of course, since the program is called “Summer of Free Wi-Fi,” don’t expect these connections to last forever. The offer will officially run from June 25 to September 7, after which Boingo would likely continue to provide Wi-Fi as a paid service in the same manner it does in airports across the United States.
