Saturday May 29, Fox will air a short Red Dead Redemption movie, using the game engine, directed by John Hillcoat.
Rockstar’s newest game, Red Dead Redemption is a bona fide hit. The sales figures are still coming in, but a quick glance at the empty shelves of video game retailers should be enough to confirm that it is a success. The impressive reviews don’t hurt either. So fans of the game should be excited to hear that a movie will debut this Saturday! Sort of.
The lines between movies and games continue to blur as a 3o-minute movie, created with the Red Dead Redemption game engine will debut this Saturday at midnight on Fox. The short film was directed by John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition), and follows the game’s protagonist John Marston as he hunts down his former outlaw partner. Using the game’s engine as a virtual film studio, Hillcoat created the original story with Rockstar.
“We could, even within the cut scenes, dismantle the camera and put it in different places and reshoot the shots,” Hillcoat told USA Today in an interview. “And likewise in gameplay we could create and set up situations and shoot it from any which way and change in all scenarios what time of day it is, what sort of weather it is. I explored all sort of bizarre things like, with the wildlife, having a bear walk down the main street of town.”
Check out the trailer below and tune in on Saturday.
